Audi MMI systems

1. What is Audi MMI system?

Audi's MMI (Multi Media Interface) is a control interface that groups together the multimedia functions of its vehicles. Similar to BMW's iDrive and Mercedes' MBUX systems, it allows you to control various equipment such as the radio, navigation or air conditioning from a central interface.

2. Early versions of the MMI

MMI was first introduced on the Audi A8 in 2002 with the MMI 2G , a basic version of the infotainment system. The latter allowed to manage basic functions, with a 6.5-inch TFT color display, CD and MP3 players, as well as iPod support.

3. How to identify your MMI version?

To identify the exact MMI version of your Audi, simply check the information on the head unit via the settings menu. By accessing the "version information", a serial code lets you know which MMI model is installed in your vehicle.

4. Transition to MMI 3G

The major evolution came with the MMI 3G , launched in the 2010s. This new version brought a faster and more user-friendly interface, with different variations: MMI 3G Basic , 3G High , and 3G+ . The 3G+ model offered a larger 7-inch screen and additional features such as a hard drive and a DVD player.

5. The MMI 3G+ High and connected versions

The MMI 3G High and 3G+ High (Connect) are distinguished by the addition of a touchscreen with handwriting recognition and, for the Connect version, an integrated Wi-Fi hotspot. These versions were present in top-of-the-range models such as the Audi A8 from 2010.

6. MMI MIB: a new architecture

The introduction of the MMI MIB in 2013 marked a turning point with a completely redesigned architecture. The system is based on two main units: one for basic controls and another dedicated to advanced multimedia functions. It allows OTA (over-the-air) updates and access to connected services.

7. MMI MIB variants

The MMI MIB has been released in several versions: MIB 1 , MIB 2 , MIB 2 High , and MIB 3 . The latter, launched recently, offers advanced voice recognition and integrates Alexa for controlling connected objects. It also offers services such as hybrid digital radio and on-demand navigation.

8. MMI system update

MMI 2G and 3G systems require manual updates via CD or SD card, while MIB versions allow OTA updates. For navigation updates, newer models can download maps directly via the myAudi website, while older models must use a map DVD.

9. Conclusion on the evolution of MMI systems

Audi MMI systems have evolved in complexity and functionality over the years. While modern versions allow for simplified updates, older versions require more manual processes. However, it is still possible to improve the performance of your MMI with firmware and map updates.
